About Us

From Bed & Breakfast to Wellness Center.
Big changes coming for Winterholme in 2016.

ST. JOHN'S, NL, OCTOBER 2015 -  Winterholme Heritage Inn & Spa is excited to announce upcoming changes to its business structure and service options, moving from a Heritage Inn, to a Wellness Center. This has been necessitated by their growing customer base and the desire to offer more to their clients. All of these changes will take effect in January 2016.

They will no longer offer bed & breakfast suites, but will continue to offer spa services, as well as spaces for meetings, weddings and private events. In place of the suites, they will offer services such as Registered Massage Therapy, Acupuncture, Naturopathic Medicine, Reiki, Reflexology and more.

"We have loved every minute in the Bed & Breakfast industry, but are looking to make a well needed change for the building, the owners, its staff and its clients," said one of the proprietors. "Although it will be sad to see the suites go, we are extremely excited about this change into the wellness industry. Our clients will receive top of the line services while enjoying the beauty and comfort of this Queen Anne heritage structure."

In terms of the suites, the business will run as usual until the end of the year, December 31, 2015. So those with current suite reservations or Winterholme gift cards will have up until the end of the year to use them for suites. However, come January 2016 those gift cards can be used towards spa and wellness services as well as events. They will contact those with current 2016 suite bookings very soon. Those with events or spa services booked for 2016 onward will not be affected by this change.

In 1993 this magnificent property was restored to a single family home and today is a 4-star Heritage Inn, with 8 well-appointed suites, an in-house spa service with four estheticians and a large main floor that is often used for special functions. Winterholme is centrally located in the Heritage District of St. John's, across from Bannerman Park and just a short walk from many of the City’s major attractions. We are also only a 10 minute drive from the St. John's International Airport.

Winterholme was built between 1905-1907 for Sir Marmaduke Winter and, at the time of its completion, was one of the most expensive private dwellings ever built in Newfoundland, costing an estimated $120,000. The property is one of the finest examples of the Queen Anne Revival style.  This style, and this house, is marked by an exterior with an expansive and bold design, comprised of a prominent circular bay, handsome, well-executed trim and decoration reflecting classical and historic motifs, and a picturesque roof lined with windows and gables.

Despite its irregular appearance, the plan is quite symmetrical with an interior arranged around the central axis of the stairwell. The rooms, as is typical of this style of domestic architecture, are large, comfortable, and richly decorated with wood, tiles, coloured and beveled glass and fine plaster work. The intent at Winterholme, and with the Queen Anne Style generally, was to consciously display to the community the good taste and social status of the occupants in an era which we have come to call 'The Gilded Age'.

Winterholme has been recognized as a National Historic Site and became a Registered Heritage Structure in December 1986. It was also awarded the Southcott Award for heritage restoration and most recently, was named Best B&B in The Overcast's 2014 readers' poll.
